Empty Containers Will Overwhelm Ports in 2023 Warns Sea-Intelligence
Ports around the world have been complaining for nearly a year about the build-up of empty containers blaming the containers piling up in their yards as contributing to the backlogs and disruption in the supply chains. Recently, ports and regulators have been looking at new steps to move the backlog of empties, but according to a new analysis from Denmark-based data analytics firm Sea-Intelligence, a return to normal in shipping could inundate ports with even more empty containers by early next year.
Gains in July US imports from Asia debunk ‘cliff’ speculation
US imports from Asia in July rose from both June and the year-ago period, the clearest indication yet that the import cliff expected from some market observers has not materialized. July, in fact, was the third-busiest month this year in the eastbound trans-Pacific and was up 13.1 percent from pre-pandemic July 2019.

Area prices are up 0.5 percent over the month and 6.3 percent over the year
Prices in the New York-Newark-Jersey City area, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), rose 0.5 percent in May, following a 0.9-percent increase in April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Chief Regional Economist Martin Kohli attributed the May increase primarily to higher prices for energy. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect seasonal influences.)
New Jersey’s Private Sector Growth Continues in July
Preliminary estimates produced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show total nonfarm wage and salary employment in New Jersey increased by 6,300 jobs in July to reach a seasonally adjusted level of 4,218,300. Private sector employment grew by 12,100 jobs. So far this year, New Jersey employers have added 101,500 jobs for an average monthly gain of 14,500.
